The Ganges River is avery important feature of South Asia. The Ganges is 1550 miles long (2500 Km). Millions of Indian Hindu's believe the Ganges river is the most sacred, or holy of all waters. The river is believed to wash away sins, and bad things the person bathing has done. The Hindu's put family members ashes that have passed away, into the river. Hindu's believe that by doing this the deceased person will be at ease on his/her next life. The origin of the Ganges is in the ice caves of the Southern Himalayan Mountains, because the river is sacred, many Hindu's bathe in the glaciers where the origin of the Ganges is. The Ganges also provide irrigation for India in the places around it. The Gabges eventually empties through the Bay of Bengal.
Ganges Pollution
Even though the Ganges River is a holy River, it has been extremely polluted. So Polluted, it has become one of the most polluted areas in the World! waste from factories and fertilizer from farms are one of the only causes. But the main reason is because of the pollution that people throw in the Ganges. The germs and bacteria in the Ganges serve a serious risk to the people drinking it and cooking with it. However, in the 1980's India built a sewage plant to clean some of the pollution. But that still wasn't enough. It didn't work well because the government didn't enforce the laws about not polluting very well.
